Rank and keyword research

Keyword difficulty checkerIs this keyword worth chasing?

Score any keyword on Google Play or the App Store: how hard it is to reach the top 10, and how often people seem to search it. Pick phrases you can actually win.

How it works

Three steps, about a minute

  1. Enter a keyword

Pick the store and country you care about.

  2. Read two scores

Difficulty from the top 10, popularity from autocomplete.

  3. Pick your battles

Popular but easy phrases are where small apps win.

What you get

  • Difficulty, explained

How many top-10 apps use the phrase in their name, and how crowded the results are.

  • Popularity from autocomplete

Phrases the store suggests after fewer letters tend to be searched more.

  • No ratings involved

The scores never use store ratings, reviews or download counts.

The guide

Two scores, read together

Difficulty without popularity is only half the picture. A keyword is worth targeting when people search it and the top results aren't all built around it.

  • Difficulty (0–100): how many of the top 10 already use the phrase in their name. Low is good.
  • Popularity (0–100): how early and how high the store suggests the phrase as it's typed. High is good.

What to do with the result

  • Good target: put it in your title or subtitle, then follow it with the rank checker.
  • Competitive: add a word that narrows it (“habit tracker for kids”) and score that instead.
  • Niche: use it in the iOS keyword field or your description, where it costs little space.

Scores are estimates from public search results. Store search changes daily, so re-check a keyword before a big listing update.

Questions

Short answers about the keyword difficulty checker and the store rules behind it.

How is keyword difficulty calculated?

From today's top 10 results for the keyword: the more of them put the whole phrase, or its words, in their app name, the harder it is to break in. It never uses store ratings, reviews or download counts.

How is popularity estimated without search volume?

From the store's autocomplete. If a phrase is suggested after only a few typed letters, and near the top of the list, many people search it. If it's never suggested while typing it, few people do.

What makes a good keyword for a new app?

A phrase with medium or high popularity and low or medium difficulty, that describes what your app really does. Those are the searches where a new app can reach the top 10.
