How it works

Three steps, about a minute

  1. Pick a store

Google Play or the App Store: each has its own fields.

  2. Type or paste

Every field shows what's used and what's left.

  3. Copy when it fits

Fields over the limit turn red with the exact overrun.

Names, subtitle, keywords, short and full descriptions, promotional text and release notes.

  • Counted like the stores

Emoji count as one character; the iOS keyword field is counted in bytes.

  • Hints for each field

Which fields are indexed for search and which ones only sell the app.

The guide

Store character limits

Each store cuts text that runs past its limit, and App Store Connect and the Play Console won't save it. These are the limits this counter checks:

  • App Store app name: 30 characters. Shown under the icon and in search. Indexed for search.
  • App Store subtitle: 30 characters. Shown under the name. Indexed for search.
  • App Store keywords: 100 bytes. Hidden, comma-separated, counted in bytes. Indexed for search.
  • App Store promotional text: 170 characters. Above the description. Can change without a new build. Not indexed.
  • App Store description: 4000 characters. Not indexed for App Store search, but it sells the app.
  • App Store what's new: 4000 characters. Release notes for each version.
  • Google Play app name: 30 characters. The strongest search signal on Google Play.
  • Google Play short description: 80 characters. Shown at the top of the listing. Indexed for search.
  • Google Play full description: 4000 characters. Indexed for search: use your keywords naturally.
  • Google Play release notes: 500 characters. What's new in this release.

How to use the space well

Put your most important words in the fields that count for search: the name and subtitle on the App Store, and the name and short description on Google Play. Don't repeat a word across indexed fields on iOS, since Apple combines them. Write the description for people: say what the app does in the first lines, because most visitors never tap "more".

Questions

Short answers about the app store character counter and the store rules behind it.

How long can an app name be?

30 characters on both the App Store and Google Play. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle; Google Play gives you an 80-character short description instead.

Why does the iOS keyword field count bytes?

App Store Connect limits the keyword field to 100 bytes, not 100 characters. Letters without accents take one byte each, but accented letters and most non-Latin scripts take two to four, so the field fills up faster in those languages.

Does an emoji count as one character?

This counter counts an emoji as one character, the way you see it. Store consoles can count some emoji as two, so leave a little room if you use them. Many emoji in titles are also against store rules.
